NHL Trade Deadline 2013: Who’s Going Where?

Well the NHL trade deadline is about a week and a half away and the rumors are starting to heat up.  This season we actually expect less activity due to it being a lockout shortened season.  However we though that it would be fun to go through the 30 NHL teams and see who might be available and which players teams most covet from a needs perspective.  Note:  Portions of this post were prepared prior to Jarome Iginla’s trade to Pittsburgh.

Here is a look at who might be available from each of the NHL’s 30 clubs as well as which players might be sought after by each club.

Anaheim Ducks – the Ducks just signed their two big guns in Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf so it is unlikely that they will be available.  The Ducks have been a bit of a surprise in this shortened season so they may not need a lot of tinkering with this season.

Who might be available?  Bobby Ryan, Matt Belesky, Daniel WinnikWho they covet: A top six defenseman like a Ladislav Smid from the Edmonton Oilers.

Boston Bruins – the Bruins have also quietly put together a great season and may not need a lot of tinkering with.

Who might be available?  Daniel Paille, Chris Kelly,Johnny Boychuk
Who they covet: Jarome Iginla from the Flames.

Buffalo Sabres – the question might be who is not available for the Sabres as they have had a disastorus season thus far.

Who might be available?  Ryan Miller, Tyler Myers, Jason Pominville, Ville Leino
Who they covet:  A puck moving defenseman, perhaps the Oilers’ Ryan Whitney?

Calgary Flames – hard to say if they will be buyers or sellers… most likely sellers.

Who might be available?  Jarome Iginla, Mikka Kirprusoff, Jay Bowmester
Who they covet:  Bobby Ryan from Anaheim

Carolina Hurricanes – depending on whether the Canes fall out of the playoff picture they may be open to a few minor trades.

Who might be available?  Joni Pitkanen, Bobby Sanguinetti, Chad LaRose
Who they covet: Ryan Clowe from the Sharks

Chicago Blackhawks – the Hawks have dominated the season but might be willing to upgrade at the forward position.

Who might be available?  Viktor Stalberg, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Ray Emery
Who they covet: Ryan Clowe from the Sharks

Colorado Avalanche – the Avs are in need of upgrades in a few positions.

Who might be available?  Paul Stastny, Milan Hejduk, Chuck Kobasew, John-Sebastien Gigure

Columbus Blue Jackets – the Jackets have been a surprising team the last month but still need to upgrade at the forward position.

Who might be available?  Nikita Nikitin, James Wisniewski, Colton Gillies, Derek Dorsett
Who they covet: Ales Hemsky from the Edmonton Oilers

Dallas Stars– the Stars might be looking for some additional scoring or a veteran top six D-man.

Who might be available?  Jaromir Jagr, Derek Roy, Eric Nystrom
Who they covet: Jay Bouwmeester from the Flames

Detroit Red Wings – the Avs are in need of upgrades on defense.

Who might be available?  Drew Miller, Patrick Eaves, Ian White
Who they covet: Jay Bouwmeester from the Flames, Ryan Whitney from the Oilers

Edmonton Oilers – the Oilers could use a top six power forward, a veteran defenseman and possibly a goaltender.

Who might be available?  Ray Whitney, Ales Hemsky, Sam Gagner
Who they covet: Ryan Clowe from the Sharks, Roberto Luongo from the Canucks, PK Subban from the Canadiens

Florida Panthers – the Panthers may leave no man unprotected.

Who might be available?  Brian Campbell, Stephen Weiss,Scottie Upshall, Scott Clemmensen
Who they covet: Derek Roy from the Stars, Roberto Luongo – Canucks?

Los Angeles Kings – the Kings are starting to come on and may not make any significant deals at the trade deadline.

Who might be available?  Dustin Penner, Jonathan Bernier
Who they covet: Jaromir Jagr – Dallas Stars, Ales Hemsky from the Oilers

Minnesota Wild – don’t look for a lot of big moves with the Wild.

Who might be available?  Torrey Mitchell, Justin Falk, Cal Clutterbuck
Who they covet: Jaromir Jagr from the Stars

Montreal Canadiens – the Habs might be looking for some more scoring from upfront.

Who might be available?  Rene Bourque, Peter Budaj
Who they covet: Ales Hemsky – Edmonton Oilers, Ryan Clowe – San Jose Sharks

Nashville Predators – the Preds could also use some more scoring.

Who might be available?  Martin Erat, Brandon Yip, Bobby Butler
Who they covet: Derek Roy from the Stars

New Jersey Devils – the Devils are another team that might make some minor moves.

Who might be available?  Steve Bernier, Henrik Tallinder, Matt D’Agostini
Who they covet: Ales Hemsky from the Oilers

New York Islanders – the Islanders could always use an upgrade.

Who might be available?  Lubomir Visnovsky, Andrew MacDonald, Marty Reasoner
Who they covet: Derek Roy from the Stars

New York Rangers – it has not been a great season for the blue shirts.  The Rangers could be looking to making a few moves.

Who might be available?  Taylor Pyatt, Martin Biron
Who they covet: Ales Hemsky – Edmonton Oilers

Ottawa Senators – the Sens have played well through an injury-riddled season.

Who might be available?  Ben Bishop, Matt Kassian, Peter Regin
Who they covet: Jay Bouwmeester from the Flames

Philadelphia Flyers – the Flyers have been a troubled team this season.

Who might be available?  Bruno Gervais, Danny Briere, Michael Leighton
Who they covet: Jay Bouwmeester from the Flames

Pittsburgh Penguins – the Pens appear to have gotten their men in Iginla, Morrow and Murray, with Crosby now out with a broken jaw will the Pens make any additional moves?

Who might be available?  Joe Vitale, Tanner Glass
Who they covet: Ales Hemsky from the Oilers.

Phoenix Coyotes – so much uncertainty with the Coyotes.

Who might be available?  Derek Morris, Raffi Torres, Zbynek Michalek
Who they covet: Derek Roy – Stars

Who might be available?  Dan Boyle, Martin Havlat, Ryane Clowe, Michal Handzus – Update:  Handzus has been traded to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Who they covet: Sean Couturier from the Flyers

St. Louis Blues – the Blues have made some minor transactions already but if they can better the team they may look to add some bodies.

Who might be available?  Chris Stewart, Roman Polak, Brian Elliott
Who they covet:  Derek Roy – Dallas Stars

Tampa Bay Lightning – it has been an awful season for the Bolts, perhaps Stamkos is the only untouchable?

Who might be available?  Eric Brewer, Ryan Malone, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Mathieu Garon
Who they covet: Johnathan Bernier from the Los  Angeles Kings

Toronto Maple Leafs – the Leafs have had a decent season but talks still persist about the need to acquire a veteran goaltender.

Who might be available?  Clarke MacArthur, John-Michael Liles, Ben Scrivens
Who they covet: Johnathan Bernier – Kings, Roberto Luongo – Canucks

Vancouver Canucks – the Canucks have not played as well as they expected this season.  In all fairness the team has battled some key injuries.

Who might be available?  Maxim Lapierre, David Booth, Roberto Luongo, Cam Barker
Who they covet: Stephen Weiss and Brian Campbell from the Florida Panthers

Washington Capitals – the Sens have played well through an injury-riddled season.

Who might be available?  Joel Ward, Jason Chimera, Karl Alzner
Who they covet: Jay Bouwmeester from the Flames

Winnipeg Jets – can’t see the Jets making any major moves at the trade deadline.

Who might be available?  Kyle Wellwood, Alexander Burmistrov, Mark Stuart
Who they covet: Ryan Whitney from the Oilers

With the trade deadline a couple of days away and with so many teams in playoff contention, we do not expect a lot of teams to make any major deals.  Will the Canucks move Roberto Luongo?  Only for the right price.  Teams that we do expect some movement from include:  The Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, and Buffalo Sabres.
